About SSPU
Shanghai Second Polytechnic University (SSPU) was founded in 1960. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, SSPU was transformed into a full-time vocational institution of higher learning in 2000. In 2003, SSPU was approved as a full-time regular institution of higher education by Shanghai Municipal Government. It is an undergraduate institution featured by engineering as its main discipline, with synchronized development of multi-disciplines, including Economics, Management Science, Literature and Natural Sciences. In April, 2009, SSPU was approved by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as a project launching institution of the engineering degree (Master's). SSPU has 5 disciplines, offering 13 categories of studies. At present, it has 28 undergraduate specialities and 30 higher vocational specialities, with its staff totaling 1100.Currently about 20,000 students are registered at SSPU, among whom around 12000 are full-time students and over 7000 are students of adult and further education.
SSPU is located in Jinqiao Industrial Park of Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Adjacent to over 50 world top 500 enterprises, SSPU has regional and geographical advantages of work-study combination and industry-university cooperation. SSPU boasts beautiful campus scenes and advanced teaching facilities. The building area of the university occupies 300,000 square metres, among which the Hands-on Training Center covers an area of 40,000 square metres with nearly one hundred professional laboratories. SSPU has been involved in all types of projects at the national and provincial (ministerial) levels funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China and 863 Program, etc. The teachers and students of SSPU are advantageously positioned in terms of technological application.
SSPU insists on combining work with study, industry-university cooperation and international exchanges, and it has established extensive cooperative relations with many famous enterprises, research institutions, and institutions of higher learning both at home and abroad. Queensland College, a joint program between SSPU and TAFE Queensland, Australia, is just a paradigm. The cooperation between the two parties, up till now, has consecutively lasted for three stages. In addition, SSPU established Monita College together with CMM Monita International Group. "Across-Straits Conference on Higher Technical and Vocational Education" has been going on for 13 years, jointly sponsored by SSPU, Beijing Union University, Shenzhen Polytechnic and Taipei University of Technology. Over the years, SSPU has established cooperative relationship with its counterparts in Australia, Sweden, Britain, France, the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, etc. and also with Hongkong and Taiwan. Through channels such as international cooperation and bilateral exchanges, educational concepts at home and abroad and experience in education are introduced and integrated. Innovation and deepening of educational reform is promoted. Internationalization of education and educational level of the university are increased gradually.
SSPU stresses the educational philosophy of "close to study, close to industry, and close to employment". It connects with advanced manufacturing and modern services, including motor vehicles, large aircraft facilities, new energy, etc. and cultivates the students according to the market demand and career-orientation. SSPU annually provides a great number of graduates for enterprises such as the ones in the surrounding Jinqiao Industrial Park, Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park and Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone.
